Ten Thousand Motels Yes. Happy BDAY Elvis. I'm not sure how old he would have been. I also find it kind of spooky that Elvis had a twin brother. I guess that baby (Jesse, I believe they named him so I assume he wasn't stillborn.) died shortly after birth but I'm not at all sure of the exact details.

a large framed version of that photo still has pride of place on my living room wall

Elvis was pretty much the reason why I got into rock 'n' roll to begin with.

Happy birthday

Today would have been his 70th birthday.
His twin brother Jesse Garon was indeed still-born, even though he was given a name.

Ive often wondered how much the course of musical history would have been changed had it been Elvis who had been still born and his brother had lived.

glencar From Page 6: ELVIS Presley, who died in 1977, would be celebrating his 70th birthday today. In honor of The King, we'll share some little-known facts compiled by Webster Hall's omniscient Baird Jones. The week of Elvis' death, People magazine put not him, but bug-eyed British actor Marty Feldman on its cover — considered by many the single worst cover choice in the history of journalism. People editor at the time, Dick Stolley, said, "I should have been fired for that mistake." Colon hydrotherapist Millan Chessman claims Elvis died from constipation because his colon was stuffed with 32 pounds of impacted fecal matter caused by addiction to prescription drugs and peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. New York magazine food critic Gael Greene once told Brill's Content she went to interview Presley for UPI early in her career and ended up in bed with him: "He was young and beautiful, and I was young and madly in love with him . . . what I remember most distinctly is that as I was leaving his hotel room, he picked up the phone and ordered a fried-egg sandwich." London's Dail Mail reports there were 37 Elvis impersonators in the world when he died; there are now 35,000

Gazza Elvis' 18 UK no. 1 singles (a record, as "A little less conversation" passed the record of 17 he joint held with the Beatles, in 2002) are being released one per week to commemorate his 70th birthday.

The first one, "All Shook Up" was released last week and this week it was "Jailhouse Rock". It's almost certain to be number 1 tomorrow when the singles charts are announced.

If it tops the charts, it will be the 999th Number 1 since the charts started in 1952.

Next week's release ("One Night"/"I Got Stung") could well be the 1,000th.

J.J.Flash Hail to the King, one of the most beatiful voices in the world, the man who defined the role and appearance of an entertainer. Certainly a gifted, talented singer.

Hey Bloozey, what about Scotty Moore? Man, he was one of the greatest guitar players in the 50's. Pay attention to his solos, such original. Heartbreaker Hotel is a masterpiece!

Long Live Elvis

absolutely, it wasn't just E by himself, Scotty's a main part of the package too, he practically wrote the book on rockabilly guitar and was an essential ingredient for Elvis 50's sound, not to mention the fat slap back bass stylings of Mr Bill Black as well

Gazza As a follow up to my previous post in this thread, "Jailhouse Rock" did indeed enter the UK singles charts today at number 1!

Elvis 19, Beatles 17.

If "One Night With You" repeats the feat next week, it will be the 1,000th UK chart topper - exactly 2% of which will have been Elvis singles.

Ten Thousand Motels Elvis lookalikes All Shook Up

Elvis impersonators were all shook up tonight as the King rocked to the top of the UK charts on the weekend they celebrated the largest Elvis Presley Convention in Europe.

Singer Leigh Casling left more than 200 Elvis hopefuls in heartbreak hotel to scoop first prize in the Elvis contest on what would have been the Rock ’n’ Roll legend’s 70th birthday.

His victory came as the re-release of Jailhouse Rock knocked Steve Brookstein off the number one spot to become the 999th song to reach the top of the UK singles chart.

Mr Casling, from St Alban’s, Hertfordshire, was among hundreds of followers at the Walk A Golden Mile In My Shoes Elvis Convention in Blackpool this weekend.

The grounds maintenance manager, who only did his first gig as Elvis in March last year, competed against 39 other look-a-likes to scoop a £2,000 (€2,900) win in the annual contest last night.

He said today he hoped the massive interest in Jailhouse Rock and the expected release of each of Presley’s number one singles over the next few months would help him take to the stage full-time.

He said: “He is a phenomenon. Whether you like him or not he is the greatest thing that ever lived. In my opinion he invented the X-factor.

“There is only one Elvis. I was brought up with Elvis. I knew the words of every song by the time I was seven.

“With all the interest in him now and this amazing prize under my belt I feel like I can fly.

“If you can go out there and make people go as crazy as that and get paid for it you have got to do it. Elvis did it and the organisers said I was the best young Elvis in the world.

“I was completely blown away. Unbelievable. I am still trying to make it sink in.”

The 37-year-old, who dressed as Elvis in the film GI Blues and sang Looking For Trouble as his winning number, is now looking to take on his American rivals in a competition.

The three-day event, which included a Las Vegas-style wedding blessing presided over by an Elvis lookalike, was organised by impersonators Michael King and Martin Fox.

Elvis’s best friend and spiritual mentor Larry Geller was at the convention, along with his costume designer Gene Doucette who brought a collection of the singer’s famous jumpsuits.

Mr King, an Elvis impersonator from north Wales, said: “Elvis will never stop. He is now and he always will be number one.

“We knew the event was going to be special but something clicked this weekend. If Elvis is looking down on us I think he would be smiling.”

thats true, it was at the Frontier Hotel I think?

Think they meant the residencies at the International (Hilton), though, after he returned to live performances

Barney Fife "The easy answer to why he's an icon would be that he somehow tapped into the psyche of America, intuitively encompassing the black/white duality of the folk ethos of the American people. On the other hand, it may be that people like making fun of a fat guy. In America, we build them up and tear them down. It could be that he started out beautiful and ended up fat.

"One thing is for sure: The guy stood for entertainment in life and he stands for entertainment in death. He can't be anything but an entertainer — whether you laugh at him, laugh with him or pop your fingers to him." -- Charlie Burton
