Joey The " Chairman of the Board " is only being investigated and the Press is now engaging in a feeding frenzy because they are tired of reporting on Iraq or North Korea ......

It could be a rough night for Petey over at CNN !!!!

Pete has written about Child Pornography many times ( See ' A Different Bomb ' over at www.PeteTownshend.com ) and is in the process of writing a book about the subject .

From Reuters just hours ago :

" The Who's Townshend Says 'I'm Not a Pedophile'"
!

By Sinead O'Hanlon

" LONDON (Reuters) - British rock star Pete Townshend, guitarist with legendary band The Who, on Saturday admitted paying to view Internet child pornography but denied he was a pedophile and said it was for research purposes.

Reuters Photo

The guitarist took the unusual step of issuing a public statement after a newspaper said police were investigating an unnamed music star as part of Britain's largest-ever operation against Internet pedophilia.

In the lengthy statement, Townshend said he had paid to enter an Internet site advertising child pornography "purely to see what was there" as research to fight the crime.

"I am not a pedophile. I think pedophilia is appalling," he said in the statement which was distributed by a woman to reporters outside his home in Richmond, south London.

"On one occasion I used a credit card to enter a site advertising child porn. I did this purely to see what was there," he said.

Townshend, 57, said he felt "anger and vengeance" toward those who found child pornography attractive, and said he believed he was sexually abused as a child but could not remember clearly what happened.

"To fight against pedophilia, you have to know what's out there," he said, adding that he was involved in an anti-pedophilia campaign that had fizzled out.

Townshend, who is married with children, had earlier left the house in a Mercedes car.

A spokesman for London police refused to comment on the matter, saying it did not talk about individual cases and was not able to confirm that police were investigating a rock star.

HIGHS AND LOWS

The Who shot to fame in the late 1960s with its zeitgeist anthem "My Generation" and cemented its reputation with such albums as "Tommy," "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia."

Townshend, who wrote most of the band's songs, was renowned for smashing his guitars during live stage performances.

Despite its many musical highs, the band has also been dogged by tragedy. Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey are the only two surviving original members of the band.

Bass player John Entwistle died in a Las Vegas hotel room last year from a heart attack triggered by cocaine use. Twenty-five years earlier, the band's original drummer, Keith Moon, died of an accidental pill overdose. The Daily Mail newspaper reported that an unnamed rock star was being investigated by officers on the Operation Ore inquiry.

The operation has resulted in more than 1,300 arrests nationwide, including 50 police officers and is partly based on information supplied by American law enforcement agencies.

Townshend said he could not remember the details of the sexual abuse he believed he suffered as a child, "but my creative work tends to throw up nasty shadows -- particularly in Tommy," he said, referring to the 1969 rock opera.

Townshend said he had been writing his childhood autobiography for several years and his viewing on the Internet had helped with his book. He hoped that its publication next year would make clear that his only "compulsions in this area" were to fight what was happening to children around the world.

He said he predicted many years ago the Internet would "subvert, pervert and destroy the lives of decent people."

"I have felt for a long time that it is part of my duty, knowing what I know, to act as a vigilante to help support organizations...build up a powerful and well-informed voice to speak loudly about the millions of dollars being made by American banks and credit card companies for the pornography industry." "

stonedinaustralia "He (Townsend)said he predicted many years ago the Internet would "subvert, pervert and destroy the lives of decent people."

he's right!!...look what's happened to all of us!!

seriously 'tho, i think "trousers" - if he's being honest and at this stage i have no reason to doubt him - will weather this storm - however, given the memory, attention span and willingness not to let the facts get in the way of a "good story" of the general public AND the media i fear that his reputation may be irreparably damaged which would be a real shame/crime as he's always come across as a thoughtful and decent human being - unfortunately, if you play with fire - even for "research purposes" - you run the risk of getting burned...

Scot Rocks Joey, I believe Pete, it was a crazy thing to do, let alone strange. However I believe in innocent until proven guilty and it should apply in this case too.

stonedinaustralia not quite sure what you mean pants - there's also references to child abuse (god, this is a pleasant topic isn't it?) in tommy (uncle ernie??) - but what should we make of that if anything?

Nellcote Pete is done.
Sometimes, you make wrong decisions in life.
Roger Daltrey can now be the singer Queen is looking for.
01-11-03 09:44 PM
gypsy I don't think everyone should jump to the conclusion that Pete is guilty just yet. Hopefully, he's NOT guilty.

Writing in the third person about child molesters and then getting caught with child pornography in your files does not look good...not at all.

IVOR.....The engine driver, a real, well literary pedophile, one of those dark shadows Uncle Pete refers to....Although it was an extremely crass thing to do,(use a credit card to access a porn site),he's not quite in The Gary Glitter Premier League just yet....By the way, remember Uncle Ernie?....Fiddle about? Ring any bells?
01-11-03 10:17 PM
stonedinaustralia pants it's just that you (and alex) seem a bit quick to rush to judgement particularly given his denial of any wrong-doing

all we have is a newspaper report that the police are investigating him in connection with this stuff and a statement from townsend denying culpability and that the authourities were aware of his involvement with the whole sorry business

it's just all a bit hysterical, but then these sorts of topics do seem to bring that out in people

the best thing would be for the police to make some statement as to what these "investigations" have revealed

01-11-03 10:21 PM
Chico Summer romance and Stary Cat could take on a new meaning with these allegations. But they wrote it WHEN they wrote it it! You cant put that against anyone.Including the fucking main songwriter of The Who. I seem SOOOO defensive just now but hey, well, you know

gypsymofo60 I hardly think the 13, 14, or 15 year old VAMPS of 'Stray Cat Blues', or the worldly wise 16 year old school girl of 'Summer Romance' really qualify as pedophillia. Sure legally there are problems, but these are songs about girls who prey on men, just as much as the men prey on the girls, pedophillia's about the exploitation of innocence, as much as the deflowering of youth. Songs like Stray Cat, and Summer Romance are more cerebral, or something. I don't know! I'm not a psycologist, but that's my take on that anyway.

Pants Make the Man Uncle Pete scored major points when he put a boot up Abbie Hoffman's ass at Woodstock. His greatest achievemant, as far as I'm concerned.

Let's hope this story leads to nothing. Look, all they have to do is take him downtown, detain him for, like, 36 hours, ask him some questions, shake him up a bit, and I'm sure everything will turn out just fine for Uncle Pete.
01-11-03 11:43 PM
gypsymofo60 If Uncle Pete's a pedophile, then I'm a North Korean without a 300 kiloton suntan!
01-11-03 11:47 PM
TheSavageYoungXyzzy Well, maybe he can finally get around to making Seige or whatever it's called.

If he does decide to call it The Who even though it's now painfully obvious that it ain't, he'd better call this next album of his "Who's Left".

I just bought The Who Sell Out. Man, that's got some stuff on it right up there with Satanic Majesties... what a weird era.

Anyone have "Dogs" up for download, that mysterious failed Who single I've never heard?

exile I feel sorry for pete if he is innocent

I mean look what the child phetophilia thing did to Micheal jacksons career...even though michea jackson is a fruitcake

Unfortunatley even if Pete is innocent its the kind of thing that sticks......
01-12-03 01:37 AM
Prodigal Son I'll tell ya, even if Pete is proven innocent, there'll be some bastards running up to him daily and accusing him of being a ped. Now, if he tries to fight it, it'll be seen as more strange behaviour.
Boy, HTM, you are drunk. Who's passport? Don't hate Pete for being caught up in it, folks.
Somebody saved me!
It happened again
Somebody saved me
I thank you, my friend
01-12-03 01:42 AM
JumpinJackFlash I really don't think nothing of it, you know how the media is nowaday's, bunch of crap if you ask me, and it really does make for headlines and gossip. If you ask me, there are limey bastard's that do worst than that. Pete does alot of thing's for different causes. I believe every word he say's. Man, if he wanted to, he could have twenty naked women, laying at his bed side. He's got other way's to satisfy "little Pete".

Highwire Rob One thing about Pete, he’s brutally honest in his art as well as personal life. I kind of remember an interviewer asking him about the Rough Boys song and its homoerotic references. Pete, as I recall, just took the bull-by-the-horns (as usual) and implied the interviewer and some listeners must be idiots if it took them that long to figure out that the song was about homosexual relationships.

These are the strengths that Townshend has going for him: he’s intelligent, sensitive, articulate, and forthright. He has no need to lie, especially at this point in his life and career. If he had an illness (pedophilia) I believe he would just admit it. Also, he’s far too intelligent not to know that his credit account would be traceable if he were truly on the prowl for kiddie porn.

Until any evidence may prove otherwise, I believe Pete.

sirmoonie Alex is drunk or he wouldn't have posted what he did.

Pants Make the Man never posts anything interesting, except troll shit like he just did.

Bunch of others here and at Gasland have turned a dislike of the Who into kicking a man when he's down.

Pete is nuts, thats why he's one of the greatest rockers of all time.

People who have sex with 13 year old girls, like Bill Wyman, Ted Nugent and Jerry Lee Lewis are pedophiles.

Townshend is not. If you know anything about him, you know that he is not.
01-12-03 03:57 AM
Honky Tonk Man I was very drunk last night and a bit fed up. Shortly after typing the post, i was sick.

Now im sober and able to put forward my views a little easier, i will give my opinion.

The truth is that i just dont know what to beleive. It is a FACT that hes been on websites and LOOKING. He says "Research"

I say that everyone should try not to get carried away. Its out of our hands. Dont go burning your copy of Whos Next quite yet!
