Topic: themusic.com.au article on Stones aussie tour Return to archive

StickyFishFingers This is nothing new re the Stones possible forthcoming aussie tour but the website that it is from is quite good for Australia related music stories. I've posted the entire article rather than just the bit about the Stones coz it mentions some other interesting possible acts hopefully (& some hopefully not) touring Australia later this year & in 2007. The article is from http://www.themusic.com.au/im_m/eliezer.php

SUPERSTARS HEADING FOR OZ
This year is already gearing up to be the year of the superstars, promoters and venue bookers say. The anticipated Rolling Stones' visit -- still to be confirmed -- is creating the most excitement.

Sources suggest that getting a venue in Melbourne is the delay. The production is massive -- anyone not swept away with the opening pyrotechnics which reveal Keith Richards strutting into "Start Me Up" is no rock fan -- that only open air shows are being considered. At this stage, the tour is expected to visit only Sydney and Melbourne.

The Sydney venue is Aussie Stadium, according to the usually reliable Stones website iorr.org, which also lists the NZ dates as the Wellington Westpac Stadium on April 8, followed by an Auckland show. The major Melbourne grounds have been locked up by Australian Football League matches. The rumour going through the industry last week was that Flemington Raceway was being considered as the Melbourne site. Paul McCartney is muttering about returning, AC/DC will be here behind their album as will the revived INXS. Foo Fighters want to bring their acoustic set to Oz, Elton John could be here end of 2006 to do a show based around the "Yellow Brick Road" album. The Who will return to Australia this year as part of a world tour, band members confirmed.

Being negotiated are Pearl Jam and Bon Jovi. Nickelback are locked in. Will Madonna return as she hinted to Aussie journalists last year? Being offered to Aussie promoters are Snoop Dogg, The Darkness, Aerosmith, Queen fronted by Paul Rodgers, Eric Clapton and Billy Joel.

Kylie Minogue's rescheduled dates will be announced soon. The UK tabloids are frothing about how La Minogue has "beaten cancer" (not yet, she's still in treatment) that she's barged into her record company telling them she wants 12 new songs, plans to do a charity concert and headline Glastonbury. All of which is news to Kyles' people, who say, umm, well, she does want to get back to work but it's still very early days yet.

In 2007, expect the massive Rock In Rio spectacle from Rio De Janeiro to visit Australia.

Gwen Stefani's visit is off, for the obvious reason she's suffering from Egyptian Disease (she's going to be a mummy, chortle, chortle).

About to be announced for an April tour is Brit folk singer Eddi Reader to coincide with the release of her The Songs Of Robert Burns (Belmore Records), and whose trio includes Boo Hewerdine. Reader was just honoured in the UK New Years Honours list.

Death Cab For Cutie, who pulled out of Big Day Out, will be here in June, says guitarist Chris Walla.

Gazza >The Sydney venue is Aussie Stadium, according to the usually reliable Stones website iorr.org, which also lists the NZ dates as the Wellington Westpac Stadium on April 8, followed by an Auckland show.

In fairness, Bjornulf has only listed these dates as "rumoured", he hasnt even gone as far as to say they are "probable"

He seemed surprised when someone on IORR suggested Geelong as a possible venue a week or so ago, so I think this report which more or less confirms it based on IORR's tour dates page

Also, doesnt it seem a bit unlikely that theyd play as many as two cities in New Zealand if theyre only playing two in Australia?
