WHO STAR BAILED BY POLICE

Rock legend Pete Townshend has been released without charge following his arrest on suspicion of child pornography offences.

The Who star was bailed after he was arrested for questioning at a London police station.

Earlier, police searched his home after he admitted paying to view child pornography on the internet.

Townshend's solicitor, John Cohen, gave a statement outside the police station shortly after midnight, as the star was driven away.

Questioned

He said: "Mr Townshend has been interviewed this evening by police. He has not been charged with anything and has been bailed to a future date when he may be required to answer some questions."

He added: "He is going home to get some rest. He is tired but all right."

As the statement was being read Townshend was spotted leaving the police station lying down on the back seat of a Mercedes, partially covered by what appeared to be a bag or a coat.

His solicitor said he had been questioned by police for an hour and 20 minutes.

The 57-year-old had said he used his credit card on one occasion to look at a website advertising child porn "purely to see what was there" and that he found paedophilia appalling.

Smashed

His London mansion and office were searched by police after his name was included in a list of 7,000 people in Britain whose identities were passed on to British police by the American authorities who smashed a US pay-per-view service.

Scotland Yard confirmed the guitarist had been released on police bail but refused to say on which date he must return to a police station.

Officers from Scotland Yard's paedophile unit, major investigation team, and child protection unit - all attached to Operation Ore - arrived at Townshend's mansion at the top of Richmond Hill in south west London shortly before 3pm on Monday, following a prior arrangement with the rock star.

The house was searched and he was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, suspicion of making indecent images of children and suspicion of incitement to distribute indecent images of children.

The star, unshaven and wearing a black jacket, left his house by a side entrance at 7.20pm and was driven off to the police station.

This is the really shitty thing with the reporting - "suspicion". Would have nice of them to add that word to all the earlier news reports, right?

exile I agree Dandelion

the IMPORTANT BIT HERE IS

Rock legend Pete Townshend has been released without charge following his arrest on suspicion of child pornography offences.

Dandelion* What I'm curious about is how bringing someone who's "under suspicion" into the police station for questioning - is called being arrested. Is this typical with British law? Or was it being misrepresented in the press? If that is the case and Pete's proven innocent would he have a case for libel? It was all over the talk radio stations yesterday afternoon. The damage has been done. Being arrested usually means they found something to charge a person with, which now appears they did not, right?

Joey - are you hanging in there? Please don't go over the edge. I'm seeing so many emoticons in your posts...

Riffhard The sickening jokes have gotten way outta hand. Fiji you seem to take some perverse pleasure in seeing this man's reputation and life's work be ripped to shreds. The fact is that everyone that knows Pete has stated that he is absolutly against child abuse and pedophilia. Pete himself was very forthright about what he had done. He insists that he is 100% innocent.

The media loves to build people up just to turn around and tear them down. This kind of story sells papers and garners veiwers. So the hell with the facts! Just say the words "child porn" and "rockstar" in the byline and your going to get reaction/listeners/veiwers/readers/money.

Ron and Fez on WNEW in NYC are having a field day with this story. Listeners calling up with reworked names for Who songs. It's already starting. The man's whole life is being destroyed and his career will never recover, but at least Ron and Fez will have strong ratings! It's sick! I quickly turned off their show and have no intention of listening again.

If the facts of the case bear out what Pete has stated I wonder just how quick these same media jackoffs will be to report his innocence?! If he is in fact guilty then he deserves what he gets, but that has not been determined yet. I for one am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

If you seem to think that this is in any way humorous than tune into 102.7 WNEW and listen with the rest of the sophmoric idiots. Nothing is funny about child porn or the destruction of one of rock and roll's true talents.

sirmoonie Well said, Riffie.

How much does a person really like rock music if this is funny? And those of you that are actually happy about it, I mean...go fuck yourself is all that comes to mind right now. Too bummed out to work myself into a real anger right now. Maybe later.

Pete's in trouble and he will plead guilty to the crime he's already admitted to in the near future. For his family, friends and fans, its whether we believe his reasons why. So far, I'm not convinced the man is into kids and don't know how some people have reached the conclusion that he is. It doesn't make sense.

We'll see.
01-14-03 01:35 PM
Hannalee I think it's still possible that Pete won't be charged. He was probably arrested, rather than just "helping the police with their enquiries", because he admitted accessing that porn site, and is therefore guilty of an offence. If, however, the police find no evidence that he stored, or spread child pornography, or went into such sites more than that once, they may well decide not to prosecute.

It's the butterfly on the wheel thing; if some nobody was involved, it would all blow over with a caution or something. Though I must admit The Times is being less than supportive of Pete... . Where's William Rees Mogg when you need him?...

100 Years Ago wouldn't it be cool if the Stones did a Who song at the MSG show, sticking up for Pete, returning the favor for what the Who did when the Stones got busted in '67, recording Under My Thumb/Good Times, Bad Times as single in support of their bust. Situation is different in many ways, yet the media feeding frenzy seems remarkably similar.

Well, no way is THAT gonna happen. "We don't DO opera," Mick said long ago, and they STILL don't.

BUT it's an interesting point. By the way, has anyone ever heard these Who/Stones songs, or better yet, does anyone have a copy of the 45 I can have free?

They don´t seem to be widely heard, do they? When they were released, the Who made quelling noises about their quality.
(Incidentally, they were done so quickly that there wasn't time for Entwhistle to return from holiday, so Pete played bass.)

No way! Not now! I think Mick and Keith should just "dummy up" over this whole messy affair, at least for now. Public opinion is turning hard on Pete...viscious. That's just the way it is, baby. If the Stones were to perform a number or two in Pete's honor on ->HBO<-...well...

But we shall see.

moy Newsy ex-wives

MICK Jagger must be praising the Lord and giving thanks he only married twice. On Monday, while his first wife, Bianca, was in Baghdad on a "fact-finding mission" - where she was unwittingly giving moral support to Saddam Hussein - second wife, Jerry Hall, was issuing a statement defending Pete Townshend. Hall, insisting the Who guitarist is not a pedophile, said: "He advised me how to prevent my children from gaining access to [kiddie porn] sites." A few hours later, Townshend was arrested.

I guess they can't all be a Jackson, Reubens, or someone safe where the media isn't worth debating.

Probably not, I'm clearly distraught.

I just pine for the black and white cases where we don't have an opinion either way. Those are funny and we can be witty.

Still, this whole affair has made me love the Stones even more. Oh, they're usually guilty, but always of something cool.
