Topic: Love That Dirty Water Return to archive
01-13-03 12:36 AM
Bluzian A note to all the rock afficiandos in here.. I've always
loved the song "Dirty Water" for many eons.. and it just
donned on me that The Stranglers were from Boston.. I can
only assume this is paid homage to the boston strangler,
Albert DeSalvo??

Questions:

1) Who originally wrote Dirty Water? The English band,
"The Inmates" or was it "The Stranglers"?

2) What year did this song come out? I'm only 28, which is
no excuse cos' I usually am up on these sorts of things,
but it's a hard song to find out about...

3) Ever noticed how SIMILAR the song is and how the lead
singer sings to the Stones & Mick Jagger?? There are
incredible similarities between the two! It's got that
early-mid sixties Stones sound, almost kinda tinny feel,
with the "poor" recording production; with tamborine
loud in the mix..

Anyways.. just a thought here..

Cheers,
Ian

PS: And to those in the T.O. region, Bobby "Blue" Bland is
playing up here on Thursday night. (@ silver dollar?)

Stonesthrow Actually, Dirty Water was by the L.A. group, the Standells. It was written by Edward Cobb and charted in 1966.

Fabio Hot Stuff Yeah , Bluezian, you damn right!!
I always loved "DIRTY WATER", the INMATES version is really fantastic! The singer, Bill Hurley is one of my favourites, a mutant off-spring of Mick J.
All the first lp of this british pub band is full of stones rocks....
The original song, as Stonesthrow tell, were played by a psychedelic garage band, the STANDELLS...
A beautifull lp of the Inmates was a live album rec in Paris where they played a bunch of Beatles songs with the STONES MOOD....and they called...The ROLLING BEATLES!!!

Bluzian the STANDELLS!!!!! YEAH!!! So that's 3 bands who do this
song huh? Right on! Totally forgot that one!! Cheers!

Yeah, it's a fantastic tune. It's fun to play as well.. I
used to play it in this jam-band up here.. We'd usually
do a few tunes.."JJFlash" "Tobacco Road" "Roadhouse Bluze"
etc..

Thanks guys!

Ian
