Topic: Do you think The Stones doing the half-time show is considered a total sell-out?....From Ian Return to archive Page: 1 2 3

IanBillen Rolling Stones to Play Super-bowl Half Time Show!.....

When I fisrt heard the news I was like...."oh-no, not them". All that went through my head was Aerosmith, Britney, and Justin Timberlake and the flack my friends would give me.

I thought The Stones would decline. Seems almost along the lines of doing songs for a major movie or something.

But nobody really mentions it is a sell out. The media doesn't make fun of them for it. It is surprising.

Now my opinion, after letting it settle is, maybe this is what they need this year. Talk about exposure. But it is still just maybe to me. I am still on the fence about it. Most everyone eles is OK with it so I am like....maybe I was missing something before. Am I and how do you guys feel about them playing The Superbowl this year?

Jumping Jack If they go out with lots of attitude, kick ass and sell rock and roll to the masses they way only they can all will be well. If they are not true to themselves and focus on an extravaganza with embarassing guests and try to act trendy they will have sold out.

They really should just blow through 4-5 warhorses like it is the end of a regular show. If they do that it will be fine. Bringing some lame ass guests up there to try and sell 20 year olds will be HUMILIATING! Bringing up cheerleaders to sing on HTW will be humiliating. Bottom line, Keef needs to have final say on this, not Mick. Keep it real Keef, don't act like fools!!!

Take no prisoners and realize the importance of the event. This could be the end of your career if you guts blow it!
January 2nd, 2006 06:49 AM
Dick Bush It would be more than enough - supposed Mick Jagger gets his pants cracked on the stage. I want to see the world!
January 2nd, 2006 07:03 AM
The Wick After that horror show with Timberjoke, nothing seems a sell out anymore. As long as they don't pull poncey duets like that again, I will live with this type of commercialism.
January 2nd, 2006 07:27 AM
padre Just got the setlist:
Miss You with Justin
IORR with Bono
HTW with Sheryl Crow (Keith does his marvellous foot-piano solo)
Satisfaction with Britney

Looks great!

FPM C10 The notion of the Stones "selling out" is pretty funny in itself - they did that as far back as 1981 when they were sponsored by Jovan Musk cologne.

They consistently do shit that makes me cringe - to be a fan you need to wear blinders. I happen to have a great pair of blinders that fit me perfectly, and I can just keep repeating "these are the guys who did "Exile"....these are the guys who did "Exile"...."

The Super Bowel thing is embarrassing to me because I can remember when there was a strict line of demarcation between jocks and heads. Of course that line was largely imaginary, but I'd still like to think the Stones were above that sort of thing, which is more within the realm of lesser lights like Aerosmith and their ilk. However, a Super Bowl appearance pales on the embarrassment meter next to them selling "Drive Too Fast" to Nascar. What's next? A gig at the Republican National Convention?

However, none of their missteps matter in the least when you go see them and they play "Midnight Rambler".

gimmekeef Love the Stones to death..but they have been selling out since they changed the words on Ed Sullivan in the 60's...But who hasnt?
January 2nd, 2006 10:32 AM
Paranoid_Android Is this a sell out??? The answer is NO!!! It's only a sell out when the STONES charge $435.00 for a ticket...otherwise, it's just the NFL trying to recoup their monies from their overblown payroll.

Yeah. I was dissapointed at that. then later I read Mick didn't want to but did it as a favor to his daughters who really wanted him to do it.

It made more sense, or maybe I should say, explained it after finding that out but still I wasn't impressed with it.

Well I am not as bad with this Super Bowl situation as when I first heard it. Maybe it isn't so bad after all. After seeing not any bad commentary from the press but more so from you guys here at Rockss Off it is making me re-evaluate my recent judment on it. The possibility that I am over-reacted is occuring to me. Still, for the most part on the fence though.

kath i was horrified when i heard they were gonna do the superbowl.

i think it's a huge sellout...but that's not new to them.

i will, of course, watch.
January 2nd, 2006 12:45 PM
Ihavelotsajam Not being AMerican, I don't really associate Superbowl with "selling out". The only thing I do associate it with is a sport in which I'm not the least bit interested. I do understand the whole anti-jock thing that a lot of music fans seem to have going, but I have a hard time believing that most Stones fans don't like to watch sports. Do all of you stick your noses up at every sporting event? Or just musicians who play at large sporting events? Who cares either way? All i know is, this is the 1st time I will bother to tune into Superbowl.
ANd I also know this isn't even remotely as embarrassing as 90210 or DOOL.

Dan Miss You is a hard song to ruin and I would rather see them do that with Justin Timberlake than Memory Motel with Dave Matthews or Wild Horses with Sheryl Crow.

Ha, ha. Exactly the point I was going to make. I think you can take it back even further, to the start times of the '69 shows, or the ticket prices of the '72 shows!

Highwire Rob They'll probably kick-ass and we'll all be watching so proud that our #1 band is still rockin' like nobody else.

But it is a sell-out in so far as Mick has been speaking his political mind on the new album and in interviews--telling the U.S. we have free speech and must use it.

You think he's allowed to choose anything that remotely speaks his mind of late? That's hypocritical and a sell-out!

But I still love 'em!

SUGGESTION: Janet Jackson should make amends by appearing on stage with Keith for a rendition of LITTLE T&A.

glencar Yes, it's a sell-out.
January 2nd, 2006 03:17 PM
Gazza yes, its a sell-out but compared to other recent head-scratching decisions its relatively minor.

I'm more bored by it than outraged, to be honest

pdog The Stones are a pop boy band from the sixties... It's truly idiotic to base anything on their career as selling out...
They became Icons and made amazing music b/c they have survived and evolved. Playing a a halftime show is just something they are doing that day, no more, no less.
It's a contrived issue, there's no issue except the one people create...

highwire There no band in the world thats get more airplay in football and hockey arenas for the main event ie football games and hockey games. Now those football fans of which I count myself one, can actually see the band thats been playing all that between play/whistles music. Its somehow fitting the Stones would make a live appearance at the biggest game of the year, seeing as they have been played at virtually every NFL game staged in the last 25 years not to mention every NHL game in the same period.
Start Me Up and We Are The Champions are the two sports event co-number 1's.

mac_daddy when i saw u2 do it in new orleans, i understand they basically did their encore (dont know, as i didnt see that cour). i hope the stones do the same kind of thing. play some tunes, straight up, and hopefully nail them (i was actually getting beer during the u2 show, as i knew the lines would be short, and i didnt want to miss any of the second half of that glorious day (when the pats spanked the rams)...

Right said, Sir, couldn't agree more. Then saying Mick Jagger is a greedy jerk is the same thing as saying Dubya is a village idiot. The Stones have chosen the really best ways to end their stage career - my estimation of them continues to climb. I'm glad to see that they fully neutralized the Keef Dicks - he formerly used to make silly troubles.

What you are going to experience is a sorta double pleasure, and I have to confess - I'm reely envious!

Poison Dart Get over it. This isn't 1967 where music meant something. It's nothing but a business. The Superbowl gives the Stones an audience of 1 billion people to sell product to. It's as simple as that.

They will perform 3 old songs and one new tune. My prediction
1/ Start me up
2/ Oh No, Not You Again or Rain Fall Down
3/ Jumping Jack Flash
4/ Satisfaction

January 3rd, 2006 07:46 AM
JumpingKentFlash Explain how it's a sell-out??? Only grumpy old men would think that. If this is a sell-out then so was the concert for trees (The free one from Licks). And then suddenly the Nicaragua concert from the early seventies is a sell-out. Where does it end??? How can another gig be a sell-out? Just because there's TV and millions of people watching it's considered a sell-out. Go home, smoke weed and listen to Their Satanic Majesties Request buffoones.
January 3rd, 2006 08:04 AM
Gazza it's "buffoons", you buffoon!

(for what its worth, I cant see the similarity between playing an event like the Superbowl for purely commercial reasons in order to promote an album and a tour and playing a benefit concert for free in LA in 1973...but anyway)

PS : Proud to be a grumpy old man!!

Well put Poison, its a simple case of mass marketing, period. Whether it will serve to increase sales of ABB to a respectable level is another matter altogether.
