guitarman53 I seen the Clash in the fall of '78 at The Rex Theatre on the Danforth in Toronto, it was a old movie theatre, it held about 500 people, it was when their record "Give "em Enough Rope" was first released, I was right in front of the stage left (looking at it from them front) I seen Joe Strummer giving such a performance like his life depended on it, sweat dripping of his face, & Mick Jones answering all those leads on his guitar, like a true guitarist, The Bass Player was on the other side, but his playing was fantastic!!!! & the Drummer was unreal!! the way this guy drummed was like lighting, they got to be the best rock band I've ever experienced up close, & I've seen quite a few ( not The Stones bye the way)

pdog They are my 3rd favorite band, I saw them once, a long time ago...

open-g I saw the Clash on the 16 Tons Tour, May 16th, 1980 in Wiesbaden, Wartburg.

Joe Strummer got really angry about some punks spittin' at the band members so he stopped the band in the middle of a song.
Said what he thought about it and then "invited" someone of the audience up stage.
Even gave him a helping hand to climb the high stage (at least 2 meters).
Joe put his left arm around this guys shoulder, held his Telecaster with the right and told that he once had got jaundice from someone spitting right in his mouth while singing & how fugly that was.
Then he clobbers the telecaster headstock on the guys head and gives him a boot in the ass.
the guy goes flying off that high stage - and on with the show.

oh yeah - the spitting stopped after that.

The setlist must have been close to this one they did 2 days after:

Clash City Rockers
Brand New Cadillac
Safe European Home
Koka Kola
I Fought the Law
White Man In Ham Palais
The Guns Of Brixton
Train In Vain
City Of the Dead
48 Hours
Somebody Got Murdered
Jail Guitar Doors
Police and Thieves
Clampdown
Jimmy Jazz
Stay Free
Bankrobber
English Civil War
Hate and War
Tommy Gun
London Calling
Janie Jones
Armagideon Time
Complete Control
London's Burning

pdog I never heard of Joe clobbering soemone with his guitar... Was this a gesture or did he whack the guy really hard?
4th January 2008 02:43 PM
open-g That was a real hefty blow - Joe Strummer was questioned by Police after that.

this website claims that that incident happend in Hamburg on the 20th of may - but I swear I've never even been to Hamburg in those years and >I< saw it in Wiesbaden, the only Clash gig I ever attended.

Didn't Courtney Love do that? I saw Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction take a tampon and pretend or possibly stick it in is butthole, and throw it in the crowd.
What's wrong with these people?

I don't know her name off hand but I believe it was somebody from L7.
4th January 2008 04:16 PM
guitarman53 I think Joe Strummer might have got the idea from Townshend who at Woodstock took his guitar & whacked Abbie Hoffman of the stage when he interfered with The Who set by trying to make political statements about the Chicago 7, mayor mistake, never walk in on a Who concert ever!

Besides Perry and Joey, Donita Sparks of the female punk rock band L7 did it at some music festival in England in 1992. She yelled "Eat my tampon, assholes!" in response to having mud thrown at her. That's one scary chick right there.

MikeyC613 I met Mick Jones the night this article was written. He and Tony James were incredibly cool. I talked to Mick for about 8 straight minutes about growing up in London, being a young musician, and what kind of guitars he was using on tour.

I went up to him for a light when I finally worked up the nerve, asked him his name, and he said "Mick." Not knowing completely who he was, and shaking like a leaf, wanting to know if all the anxious behavior I was exhibiting was deserved,

I boldly asked, "Mick what?". He said, "Jones." I said, "Oh man, it's great to meet you, I love your music. My name's Mike. Janie Jones! How did that song come about?"

Mick: "I was just riding the bus one day, and I heard that rhythm (bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-bum...)"

ME: I love that song, it sums up being young and in love with music. That's a great song.

My friend sarcastically said, "Well there you have it, Mike thinks it's great".

Mick laughed that he and I had the same name, and I talked to him about Big Audio Dynamite for a while. It was such a fucking thrill. I was playing in the band mentioned in the article (Kittens Ablaze), and told him that during soundcheck I heard that I heard he was hanging out in the VIP room, so I played the bass riff to "Train in Vain". I asked him how to play it, and he told me, "Ah, yeah, it's just D to Ayyyy, D to Ayyy."

It was so fucking cool talking to one of my heroes.

Rudy Can't Fail.

monkey_man The Clash is one of my all time favorites. I saw them at Bonds 4th show, Asbury Park in 82, Shea Stadium 2nd Who Show, Hofstra and the Philly Spectrum in 84. I saw Strummer solo a handful of times beginning in 89.
