But, for you, if your girlfriend or boyfriend doesn't like
the Stones, what you do?

monkey_man I'd have to say the Stones were my first. I didn't really have much of a choice because my Mom is such a huge fan. I had their music going in my house from the time I was an infant. The 1st LP I ever bought with my own money was Some Girls.

polytoxic First record I ever bought:

I was six years old. End of fucking story.
Although I did like Supertramp as a kid too.

guitarman53 I'm the old man here, the first was The Beatles, I never heard of any other English groups until the Beatles came to Canada & U.S. I mean all the other groups followed them, I loved The Stones better, just loved their music & pictures, they appeared out of their album jackets like they'd call anybody's bluff, in '64 it was the Stones for me, but I respected The Beatles, simply because the Stones & them were good friends, & they took music somewhere else besides Rock 'N' Roll, like on Rubber Soul & the later albums, some people on this site, for some strange reason, doesn't like the Beatles, any musician at all appreciates their songwriting, & where they took music too, into classical instruments, like Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby & so on, so I was caught by Beatlemania & then I heard The Stones, & that was it.

Yeah, it was pretty much the Beatles for me too. I mean,
I was young for Elvis and all, but preferred Little
Richard, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Eddie Cochran, Gene
Vincent.....and the Beatles seemed pretty harmless at the
time {I was 11, lol}. I bought into the "scary" Stones
theory...you know, they were thick and dirty and just
thugs in general. That's what the adults were feeding
us, when they first came out, and I pretty much believed
them. I still remember the first picture of the Stones
that I laid eyes on. It was in color--the boys were walking
somewhere outside. Brian had on an off white sweater and
dark pants, most of the rest had on dark, nice sweaters
too. And yeah, maybe their hair was a little longer and
scruffier than the Beatles' hair {execept for Brian's
perfect coif, of course}, but they sure didn't look that
threatening to me.... And when I heard their blusey
sound, I was hooked.

You're quite welcome, Mr. guitarman... Yeah, the Beatles
really hit over in the U.S. first, and it was hard not to
be swept up by all the hubbub. After all, 1963 was a pretty
bad year for music in the U.S. We DID have Spector's girl
groups, and a bit of Del Shannon and such, but we had a
LOT of drivel---stuff even my Mum couldn't stand {Bobby
Vee, Bobby Vinton...seriously! Ugh..} When the Beatles hit
it was like nothing we'd ever really heard before, unless
you were lucky enough to get some of the black R&B stations
who were playing the Isleys and Contours and such. Our
President had just been assassinated and it was a sad,
tragic, weird time. The nation was looking for a "healing".
Something positive and rejuvenating.

One thing I always found interesting was the fact that in
the U.S. it was perfectly all right to like both the
Beatles AND the Stones, whereas in Britain, I think kids
pretty much liked one and hated the other. There were
distinct Beatles and Stones "camps" of fans. I wasn't
aware of that until much later when I got my hands on some
of the British mags of the 60's....

Zack For me it was definitely the Doors. I listened to my tapes so often they fell apart, and read No One Here Gets Out Alive so many times it fell apart too. I wore Jim beads around my neck, but was never able to locate a pair of black leather pants. Thank god.

corgi37 1st single i ever got was Monster Mash
1st album Goodbye yellow brick road
1st time i noticed a chick on tv - Abigail in No96 (ace tits!)

I dug Elton for a couple of years. I was impressed with the fact he had 200 pairs of glasses.

I floated around not into anyone really until 1978.

Then its Stones all the way baby.

That was the first album I ever bought. I led a
protest when my Girl Scout leader tried to hold
our meetings on the night the show was on TV.

I've got to go play some Midnight Rambler now to
get past this humiliating confession.

Nasty Habits When I was in second grade I was totally obsessed with this album:

14th December 2007 10:06 AM
GotToRollMe The Beatles, of course! I remember getting sent home from school because of all the buttons and crap I was wearing on my uniform. I even stuck on the label from the licorice LP I'd just consumed at lunchtime (and I don't even like licorice).
14th December 2007 10:48 AM
SweetVirginia Yeah, right. They sent you home just for wearing buttons.

actually voodoo, I took a year of classes off the former VP business affairs of RCA and one of his favorite sayings was "If you can't sell the music, sell the haircut".

Later as VP of Casablanca he helped come up with KISS.

He used to tell story of him and Neil Bogart going to a club in greenwich village, coming back the next day with a clothes designer and having costumes made. they filled the costumes with actors and called them The Village People.

But I still think his best story was about his daughters 6th birthday. She got to take the day off from school, and he was going to take her to lunch. Mom took her too his work to pick him up. they were all ready to leave when he remembered he had to grab something in the next room. When they went in there were the Monkees with Davey Jones (her favorite) holding her birthday cake with the candles lit singing "happy Birthday" to her.

THAT would have been a rush for a 6 year old girl !!!

Well, before listening the Monkees I listened other bands like the Beatles, but was more into the Monkees (1966-1967), I listened the Stones the first time in 1966 too but they were not on the radio. However I also became a fan of the Stones and the Beatles

The radio stations used to make phone battles between the Beatles and the Monkees and I always voted by the clowns LOL. I always watched their ugly TV programs and remember how good time I had, I was only 10 years old

Pathetic, probably the ugliest moments of my life.
