Topic: SARS Toronto show to be officially released on DVD Return to archive Page: 1 2

fna69 They are the final 3, and I think they showed Start me up as well. I have the whole show on mp3 and on dvd, and its a pretty standard show. The usual long jams on Satisfaction and JJF. The first 4 songs were fucked because of sound, but I am sure the DVD will overdub it. The nearness of you is really the only gem type song, as most of the show was a GH show. the highlights for me was watching a load of people singing along to YCAGWYW, seeing that was quite a site. Also Rock me baby was quite interesting. The Miss you duet is decent until they start singing cry me a river, u can almost hear everybody say "noooo" excluding the teeny bopper girls screaming. I hope the DVD has better sound which I know it will.

SHINE A LIGHT i also think cohl will release the entire stones' bit. i was backstage, so at first i could not figure out what keith was yelling about (the lack of sound, i find out) and then he also started yelling at the crowd for tossing bottles at timberperson AND HITTING JAGGER in the melee!! i want the dvd just to watch keith losing it so many times in ONE show. keith is usually sooooooooo cool, but the entire band was on edge that night (and very tired).
01-01-04 08:26 PM
glencar So it IS historical after all!
01-01-04 08:42 PM
SHINE A LIGHT it's "historical" for the following reasons:
- it was the largest paying crowd in rock history
- it was very "peaceful", the anti-altamont
- the stones were right off the stage from prague, right back on the plane to spain (that's pretty cool)
- the "world's longest barbeque" was held there due to the mad cow thing canada was also fighting
- keith was amazing/angry/yelling at the crowd/fighting off water bottles (like when he hit the bloke over the head with his guitar, never missed a lick)

ps. it's "historical/hysterical" viewing,i think.
01-02-04 01:21 AM
Sir Stonesalot OK, you people obviously have a different definition of "historical" than I do. I see nothing historical about a big BBQ pit, or ticket sales. That's a line or 2 in the Guinness Book, not a history book. It's a pink question in Trivial Pursuit, not on a modern history test.

In my view, there has only been 1 "historical" event in 2003. By that, I mean an event that will be remembered worldwide by generations to come. An event that garnered worldwide media coverage, and stayed in the headlines. An event that people will write books about, and will be taught to students in world history classes. An event that will affect the future of millions of people.

That event is the US invasion of Iraq.

THAT is what people will remember about 2003 in 25+ years. And that is really a shame.

SARSfest was a really cool thing, and an awesome deal for Canada, and especially Toronto. But in a "historical" light, it's pretty insignificant.

01-02-04 01:27 AM
fna69 worldwide this is not a historic event at all, but for a Stones fan, and music fan of the bands that played, and for the people who went there, this is a historic event. I am sure some rap fan could give a shit less about it, but fans of the stones, ac/dc, jt, those fans will remember this. and anyone who participated will remember this as a historic day and event.
01-02-04 01:47 AM
glencar Let's see, there was a massive blackout, an epidemic & a space shuttle blew up. And a despot was captured. For liberals, some historic news: Rush uses pills recklessly. Just a bit of history for ya.

Exactly. And because we're talking (well, initially, at least) about the SARS DVD, this is historical for a Stones fan. World events that effect humanity or the environment is a different ball game, imho.
01-02-04 09:57 AM
SHINE A LIGHT well certainly, in the face of war/plague/worldwide terror/etc. this sars concert is a paltry event.

but, i was trying to explain that the dvd just might be worth a look.....especially in these really historically trying times.
01-02-04 02:49 PM
Sir Stonesalot >but, i was trying to explain that the dvd just might be worth a look<

I said that in my very first post on this thread! Lesser events have had mass media releases, SARSfest surely should as well.

Oh, and Blue....the blackout, the shuttle disaster, Rush, Wacko Jacko...those are all US stories. No one outside the US gives a shit about any of that. That stuff is not what I would consider "historical" events. Those things are no more than footnotes.

I personally think that the Iranian earthquake is much more significant that any of the above mentioned stories. Yet there is next to no coverage of it here. 25,000+ dead and no one seems the least bit concerned about it here in the States. It is awful and tragic. And if it had happened almost ANYWHERE other than in despised Iran, it would be a HUGE story.

Like I said before...we all have our own definition for the word "historical". I think it's one of those words that we toss around too casually...like the word "great". You know, like, Q: "How's your cheeseburger?", A: "It's great!"

Obviously, a cheeseburger can't be "great"...not really. It can taste good, it can satisfy one's hunger, it can be enjoyable...but that does not make it "great". A cheeseburger can be nothing more than adequate. We have taken words that should MEAN something significant, and trivialized them to the point that they are almost meaningless. Or worse, the words mean many different things to many different people...in effect making them meaningless AND the cause for confusion.

In fact, a New year's Resolution. I will not use words like "great" and "historical" in a trivial fashion any longer. You may all feel free to join me.

Did you ever read the book "The Way We Talk Now" by Numberg (sp)? He is a linguist out at Stanford. Anyway, the whole book is about our misuse of the language - a fascinating read.

A Perfect Echo - Neil Young 1967-2001

How could I introduce the new tree better than in the words of Jim and Braden, the masterminds behind the project?

Here are the main details:

Jim's introduction:
... our good friend Braden Strickler has done it again. He's recently compiled and lovingly mastered, almost exclusively from soundboard recordings,
an 8-DISC SET which runs chronologically from August 1967 to January 2001. It's like an expanded version of the "Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy" concept,
but with far superior sound.

Thank, of course, to Braden, for agreeing to let me tree this one. Braden makes incredible compilations, often - for his own enjoyment and that of
his friends. Many of them are non-Neil-related, and I helped convince him that this one deserves wide distribution on Rust.

Here's Braden's "introduction" to "Neil Young: A Perfect Echo," which includes the track list for the 8-disc set:

NEIL YOUNG: A PERFECT ECHO

This is a compilation of soundboard recordings from 1967-2001. The term soundboard is a bit of a misnomer. By soundboard I mean, basically, not an audience recording. Some are true soundboards, while others are FM, TV, ALD, or video-sourced recordings. The recordings were all taken from cdrs or videos that are circulating in the trading community.

Each track was checked out in Cool Edit with headphones, and may have had some cleanup done to remove any odd clicks, hiss, or other sound quality problems. The volume was set on each track so as to have them at similar volumes. Fades were added at the beginnings and ends of each track, so the tracks don't segue, for the most part. There are a couple of segues where successive songs were taken from the same concert, so it still needs to be burned DAO. Most of the banter between tracks was removed to make room for more tracks.

There are a total of 115 tracks (109 songs, as 6 get repeated). Some years were heavy with available recordings (1976 and 1989 come to mind). I tried to balance the set by not using too many songs from a single show. The entire 8 discs run in, roughly, chronological order.

Originally, I started making this as just a personal compilation from my collection. It took about a month to put together, including the planning of what would be included, the remastering of the tracks, and, finally, the creation of the artwork. At first, I didn't have a title and was just going to call it "a soundboard archive." While fixing some soft static in Natural Beauty, the title came to me, when he sang "I heard a perfect echo die...". I was going to call it "Perfect Echo Die", but Jim Leonard, our friendly AOTW coordinator, persuaded me to leave off the word "die," so now we have the title "A Perfect Echo".

The intent was to make a nice sampling of soundboard recordings from throughout his career. Its sort of like an expanded "Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy," with the intent to keep the sound quality higher and more consistent.

glencar SS, under your qualification system, very few things would qualify as historical. As for the earthquake, I've seen extensive coverage of it on CNN this morning. Anytime that many get killed, it's historic. And the shuttle disaster qualifies as historic. Anytime man gets killed on the way back from outer space, it's historic.

I disagree with your denial of cheeseburgers as great. In the right circumstances, even a McD's cheeseburger could qualify as great. Like after recovery from a weeklong illness where you can't eat anything. That said, I agree with you on the easy devaluation of our language. It's part of the evolution of our anguage and you, my friend, will be just anotther lonely voice in the wind. It's an onslaught out there.
