The Who's Townshend Mulled Suicide Over Child Porn
LONDON (Reuters) - British rock legend Pete Townshend contemplated suicide during a police inquiry into his use of child pornography, he said in an interview published on Sunday.
The 58-year-old guitarist from the Who was arrested in January during a high-profile crackdown on Internet child porn and was formally cautioned in May after a four-month investigation.
Townshend, who said he was abused as a child, publicly admitted viewing child pornography but said it was purely for research purposes.
"If I had had a gun, I would have shot myself," he told Britain's Observer newspaper. "And if I had shot myself, it would have been awful because it would have confirmed what everybody thought."
The inquiry found he had visited a Web site containing child abuse images in 1999 but did not download any images.
On top of the formal caution, police have taken a DNA sample from Townshend and put his name on the national Sex Offenders Register for five years.
"I'm not sexually attracted to children," he said in the interview. Among the Who's many songs was the track "Fiddle About," which dealt with the issue of child abuse.

Rock star Pete Townshend reveals today how he contemplated killing himself after he confessed to downloading child pornography.
'If I had had a gun, I would have shot myself,' he tells The Observer in an exclusive interview. 'And if I had shot myself, it would have been f*****g awful because it would have confirmed what everybody thought.'
Townshend was arrested last January after it was disclosed his name was on a list of suspects gathered by the FBI as part of an international investigation into child pornography on the internet. He subsequently confessed he had once used his credit card to access child pornography.
'I know that I caused the most incredible chaos by that one single neglectful careless act - for my ex-wife, for my son who's only 13, for his school friends, for my girlfriend, all of whom had to make a snap decision to wing behind me. And they all did,' he says.
Townshend, who was cautioned by police, insists he is not a paedophile. 'I'm not sexually attracted to children.' He also reveals that two child-related charities to which he had sent money had sent back some donations. 'I knew there was a developing witch hunt in progress and I thought, "Oh my God, this is going to be hung on me."'
He also says the woman in the US who had found his name on the list of paedophile suspects had broken down in tears because she was such a huge Who fan.

Witchhunt? The guy gave his credit card to a pedophile site & looked at kiddie porn. He's lucky he still has his freedom. Saying it was for research may buy him some credibility among fans desperate to believe in their hero but it's a very murky area. |

I agree it was a very stupid move by Pete. But look at freaks like Jackson (still unclear), Gary Glitter and R. Kelly. We know for certain of their guilt and they don't get ragged on around here as much as the innocent Petey, though there's lots more Who talk that could explain it. I just don't see how a guy fighting peodophilia can be one himself. Highly unlikely/unorthodox. It's like a gay person going on a mission to deny homosexuals certain rights whether it be moral or religious. Being outspokenly homophobic. The point is, who would (even still in the closet) do that to cover up the truth about themselves? That's the issue with Pete.
And about his wife TSYX, I thought he had gotten back together with his then-wife Karen Astley after a seperation in his doper days of 1979-82. He has a 13-year old son but I'm not so sure if it's by another woman or not. |

Steve, when Jackson was first arrested back in 1993, I believed in his innocence. When he bought the kid's silence for $20 million, that ended. I hope Pete is not guilty (I know he's not guilty in the legal sense) but my fear is that someone who pays a kiddie porn site is looking for something. Research? Maybe but it's an odd way to research something & I'd think he'd have more resources to help with research. |

This isn't a completely unheard of psychological phenomenon. Freud called it Reaction Formation and it occurs at a sub-concious level:
"A defense mechanism whereby an unconscious and unacceptable impulse or feeling that would cause anxiety is converted into its opposite so it can become conscious and be expressed. For example, a person adopts a set of attitudes and behaviors that are the opposite of his or her true dispositions."
"Reaction Formation:
Reaction formation is the development of a new point of view concerning an old desire which could not be fulfilled.
As Freud puts it:
As the child becomes aware of sexual excitement which cannot be fulfilled, the sexual excitations evoke opposing mental forces which, in order to suppress this unpleasure effectively, build up the dams of disgust, shame and morality." |

but still, how many people here can honestly say they'd think Keith was a pedophile if this had happened to him? Everyone would deny it, say no way. Because most are not devout Who fans, they label Pete to be such despite his protests. But if it were a Stone, many woul d be backing them immediately. Who here can say they'd make no exceptions for a Stones member if this was the truth? Some still love Bill despite him dating a 13 year old. |
