Topic: INCREDIBLE STONES REHEARSALS BELL CENTER Return to archive
01-07-03 11:57 PM
MR D Hello everybody and thanks for the warm welcome!
i was lucky enough to see the stones rehearse for a second
day in a row at the bell center. this time, mick was there
and the band blew me away.they took the stage early, a few
minutes before five.keith surprised everybody with the intro
to brown sugar that sent ronnie and daryl running to get
their axes. the band had amazing energy, even with mick
saving his voice a bit.
if you can't rock me is next with woodie on wah wah.
great fuckin r'n'r!!!
keith tries to do the split onstage before they get into
monkey man and then live with me complete with sax solo
courtesy of the great bobby keyes.
mick then says rocks off in a low voice.this is becoming
a dream set and i have to pinch myself!!! keith nails the
intro like it's 1972 on steroids and i take another sip
from the mickey i stashed in my coat.
next keith takes his black gibson 355, ronnie his strat
and i'm surprised to hear them play a great electric
version of sweet virginia. mick does the harp intro and
then a roadie hands him the gibson hummingbird acoustic
guitar. the version is flawless and by this time i'm
speechless!!!
before they take a break they play a faster version of
wild horses, keith and ronnie both on electric guitar.
it's now six thirty and they're back.
mick takes the acoustic and loving cup is next.amazing.
then a song i was praying to hear: can't you hear me
knocking? yes i can!!!
the guitar intro could be a little dirtier but the
rendition is great. ronnie is dancing during the sax
solo. next mick does some great bluesy harp followed
by wood's solo, borrowing a good part of the original
solo by mick t.
street fighting man sees keith richards enjoying
himself immensely: he's kicking the air like he's
playing for 80,000 people at a stadium show!
before taking another break the stones go to the small
stage and play a mean, dirty, amazing version of
mannish boy. there's about twenty people in the arena
and they burst into applause after that for the first
and only time. to see the stones play the blues with
such passion on that little stage in an empty arena
was a very special and poignant moment for those
present.
after the break, a little set up is made near the b stage
for the tv interview with all 4 stones sitting on stools
together.
soon after they come back without mick for a dramatic
version of thru and thru. keith's voice sounds just fine
and he seems really happy. they finish with can't be seen
with you.
we weren't aloud to take pictures but i still took a few
from far on the press gallery. nothing great but i will try
posting them tomorrow.
an amazing night, and tomorrow the real show!!!
i've seen the stones live about twenty times since the
some girls tour in 78 and i think they're presently at
the top of their game.
we're off to an awfully good start for 2003!!!
