Rolling Stones take over Le St. James all 61 rooms

Nine dollars for a glass of chardonnay at the hotel bar won't break the bank for the Rolling Stones, currently in residence at the toney Le St. James Hotel in Old Montreal.

Hey, this band has more money than the annual budget of some developing nations.

But if you thought you might stop by to raise a glass in the elegant hotel lounge amid the polished silver and tastefully appointed environs and catch a glimpse of Mick, Keith and their mates, you're sadly out of luck.

Guitarist Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones pauses to sign an autograph yesterday as he leaves Le St. James Hotel in Old Montreal. Only those associated with the band are allowed into the hotel.

The geriatric bad boys of rock 'n' roll have commandeered all 61 rooms in the stately hotel, and mere mortals will have to wait until Thursday, the day after the Stones' concert at the Bell Centre, for a chance to pass through the doors of the St. Jacques St. hotel.

Doormen standing guard at the front entrance yesterday were polite but firm in their refusal to admit anyone not associated with the band, which includes various roadies, managers and agents.

The doormen wouldn't discuss their famous guests, showing the same discretion they exhibited during Grand Prix weekend, when the hotel first opened to the public and numerous Formula One racers were rumoured to be in residence.

Of course, you can afford to be tight-lipped about your clientele when your hotel aims to cater to the ultra-rich who can pay your decidedly upscale rates and the primo rock group of all time takes over the entire joint at a slow time of the year.

The least expensive of the individually designed rooms at Le St. James goes for $325 a night.

The most expensive is the penthouse apartment, which rents for $4,000 per night.

Plasma-screen television sets are standard in all rooms. There is a grand piano in the terraced apartment.

One can assume that the Stones' technical support are not staying in the penthouse.

Montrealers exhibited their usual nonchalance about having rock royalty in their midst for four days.

Most lunchtime strollers in Old Montreal yesterday paid little attention to the two black limos waiting outside the hotel on St. Jacques St. or to the floppy-hatted dame with the requisite makeup case and a bottle of Heineken in hand who waltzed out to one of the limos.

The nonchalant vibe extended to guitarist Ron Wood, who many expected to attend a vernissage of his serigraphs and etchings at the Just for Laughs Museum on St. Laurent Blvd. last night.

While the media-heavy crowd cooled their heels admiring his renderings of fellow Stones and other musicians like Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and the late Marvin Gaye, Wood was a no-show. It was the same routine he pulled in Toronto at another of his art shows, leaving the crowd to scoff sushi and sparkling wine without him. Tough chore.
