Topic: Question for some of you who have a complete set of ABCKO remasters Return to archive

dkmonroe I just got the London Years Singles Collection this week, and, of course, it's 99% mono, which I knew was the case. However, I'm curious about the difference in sound quality between the mono and stereo verions of the same songs. It seems as if some of the mono versions from the Singles collection have a lot of tape hiss. Do any of you notice tape hiss on the stereo tracks on, say, Rolling Stones Now, 12X5, Aftermath, Between the Buttons, etc?

I'm only curious because I want to know whether it's worth my while to get the stereo verions as well. If tape hiss is just a consequence of these very old recordings, then I might as well not bother. I like many of these songs better in mono, but I'm always on the hunt for the perfect, noiseless, pristine version of any given Stones song.

BigMac It is worth it to get the pristine stereo versions of all the songs. I got every Stones CD from Santa this year (except for the Big Hits-High Tides and Big Hits-Through the Past, Darkly)

My Aftermath UK seems to all be in mono. I got ot because I was told to get the UK versions of Out of Our Heads, Aftermath & Between the Buttons. OOOH & BTB sound like they are stereo, but Aftermath sounds like mono, especially on Mother's & Under my Thumb which I have on 40 Licks & Hot Rocks in stereo versions.

I'm not rich, so I couldn't afford to but them on my own so I just gave my family and my in-laws the lists from which to choose from and then , bam... I'm in Stones heaven.

Good luck, stereo is the only way to go. London Years sucked- but I got it the day they were released because I didn'y know that most of the old 45 single masters were in mono. How about that terrible version of Street Fightin with a tape loop echo on the chorus. I listened to it once and realized that I need to just go ahead and get them all. Aside from one track which was released on the US version of OOOH, I have every studio realeased recording of the Stones. Still working on boots and live material.

Stonesthrow Big Mac-- Are you joking about Aftermath? I have not only the UK '80s cd version but also the new SACD of UK Aftermath. Every song is full rich stereo. UK Aftermath is better because of 3 songs not on the US version (Mother's Little Helper, Take It Or Leave It, and What To Do, not to mention the extended version of Out of Time). It doesn't have Paint It, Black but 73 other albums do so it's easily accessible. UK sonic quality is also better. Are you perhaps confusing Aftermath with Out Of Our Heads which is mono for both American and English versions? If you really mean Aftermath, you have either a defective disk or a defective system.

Of the ABKCO SACD releases, Between the Buttons shows the greatest sonic improvement over its previous cd.

The problem with getting the UK version of OOOH is that half the songs are from either December's Children or Rolling Stones, Now! If you are a completist, the US version is better. Two songs on US don't appear anywhere else (I'm Alright and One More Try) and two others only on the Singles Collection (UAWCPM and Spider And the Fly).

gypsymofo60 So far I've only acquired England's Newest Hitmakers, and 12by5 on DSD, but I can discern no audible tape hiss, and if there is some it is negligble on your average system. As for The Singles collection, my copy is a German pressing, and although lacking somewhat as you would say "sonically", please excuse the spelling there, I think it has a crispness about it. Anyway, it's far and away the best collection of 60s material ever gathered in one set, and that alone makes up for the deficiency in sound quality. IMHO you should get whatever you feel you want, or need as far as Stones recordings are concerned, after all it's only money, what else are ya gonna spend it on?..On second thoughts, don't answer that. Stonesthrow, I'm still looking for an original German pressing of UK Aftermath.

Stonesthrow GMF-- The sound quality on the UK Aftermath SACD is as good or better than the 80s German cd and readily available whereas the German cd is out of print. However, if you really want it, pm me about a trade or b & p.

dkmonroe Thanks for the info, guys. I was definitely planning on getting Between the Buttons, now I'll probably end up getting UK Aftermath as well. Pity is, I already have the UK Aftermath in mono with bonus tracks (the infamous German boot version), and Sister Morphine's "Could You Walk on Water", which is basically UK Aftermath in stereo plus a bunch of other vaguely related tracks. I got both long before the ABKCO remaster project. I'm going to have more bloody versions of more bloody Aftermath songs than I know what to do with. I don't doubt, however, that the sound quality of the new ABKCO version is better.

I'm not sorry I got the Singles Collection, though. The mono version of "Let's Spend the Night Together"' is far and away the best one, IMO. Actually, I prefer most of the early Stones in mono, I just don't like the tape hiss!

Thanks Stonesthrow! The generosity around here never ceases to amaze, and humble me. I'll keep an eye out for it, but here in Australia all I ever seem to see, (even in specialist stores), is the London/abcko release. My UK vinyl copy is still in resonable nick at present, but thanks for the offer, cheers!

JaggaRichards Do make sure you get the remastered 12 X 5.
Around And Around, Confessing The Blues, and the long version of 2120-all in stereo!
Can't be beat!

I was listening on the headphones last night, you're right! An amazing job has been done on this DSD. All I ever had was an ancient copy of 12times5 on vinyl, so this has been a real ear opener. I'm gonna have to get TSMR on CD now, never bothered before.

Stonesthrow Aside from those three, Empty Heart, It's All Over Now, and If You Need Me are also stereo. Fully half the songs are stereo (it would have been 7 if the stereo guitar version of Time Is On My Side had been included).
