Martha Dear Concert Goers,

I needed to look over my year in music to remind myself that there was something ongoing that ROCKED me this year. Music is my medicine and I feel very lucky to have seen so much in 2005. It was an exceptionally good year for music......(and thank goodness with all else going on in my life). I feel very grateful to have gotten to see all these shows.

Here goes:

Feb 23: Govt Mule: Bogarts Cincinnati, OH

Mar 4: Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mtn. Boys; Blue Gator Athens, OH

Apr 1 Bob Dylan opener Merle Haggard; Chicago
Apr 2 Bob Dylan opener Merle Haggard; Chicago
Apr 3 Bob Dylan opener Merle Haggard; Chicago
Apr 6 Bob Dylan opener Merle Haggard; Detroit

Apr 12 Johnny Mellencamp and Donovan Louisville, KY

June 11 Dylan-Nelson Ballpark tour with Greencards Greensboro, NC

June 14 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers opener The Black Crowes; Cincinnati

June 18 Buddy Guy; Fraze Pavilion Dayton OH

June 24 Johnny Mellencamp opener John Fogerty (1st show of the tour) Cincy

June 26 Dylan-Nelson Greencards Ballpark tour Cleveland
June 29 Dylan-Nelson Greencards Ballpark tour Louisville

July 9 Mark Knopfler Fraze Pavilion Dayton, OH

July 11 Allman Brothers; Cleveland
July 13 Allman Brothers; Columbus
July 20 Allman Brothers; Cincinnati

July 29 Elvis Costello, Emmy Lou Harris, with Larry Campbell; Fraze Dayton, OH

Aug 7 ZZ Top; Ohio State Fair Columbus, OH

Sep 7 Derek Trucks Band; Blue Gator Athens, OH

Sep 10 White Stripes opener The Greenhornes; Columbus, OH

Sep 24 ROLLING STONES "Sway" Columbus, OH
Oct 8 ROLLING STONES; Duke University, NC

Wow! It truly boosted my spirits to look the year over.

I am jonesin' to see the Stones at MSG......we'll see if that comes to pass. It is always great to open the year with the STONES as either show number one or the last show of the year.....like my 2005 ended. :-)

I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Peace out,
Martha

Jumping Jack A very good year for RnR.

Highlights were the Stones, Alice Cooper, Doobies, and Santana
January 2nd, 2006 06:44 AM
M.O.W.A.T. Other than the Stones shows I went to, Motley Crue was excellent also.

FPM C10 Wow! Martha, you did get to a lot of fantastic shows this year!

My year was much leaner, but great nonetheless - Hubert Sumlin w/David Johansen & Levon Helm in March; The New York fuckin' Dolls in May; Joan Baez, Steve Earle & Wayne Kramer at the Peace demonstration in September; the Stones w/Beck in October; and Fiona Apple in December.

Seems like there was more but that's what I remember.

This year's starting out good - played a kick-ass show with my band Friction on New Year's Eve; Stones at MSG on the 20th; we also have tix to see the Pogues in March and front row tickets to see Ralph Stanley in April.

Hey Flea! Very nice indeed. I would love to see Fiona never have seen Joan Baez either and must. I am hoping to catch Patti Smith in 2006...we've never caught her yet.

Then there's the people I cannot stop seeing....Stones, Petty, Mellencamp, Dylan......Neil, The WHO.....to name a few.

I sure do hope we get ourselves stabilized by Chris finding a job VERY soon. I may need some prayers about that!

Rock On!

xxxxxooooo,
Martha

Slavegirl The best concert was The Stones this year of course, saw them at SBC Park (from the first row no less!)but I also saw Tiger Army and Depeche Mode among a few other small local bands. I have to say Depeche Mode at the Pond in Anaheim was an incredible show almost to rival the Stones, but then again I am also a fan of theirs.

august:ZZ Top, Steve Miller Band, George Thorogood
September: THE STONES and Pearl Jam (take that all you people that had crappy openers!)

Gazza mm..lets see

Feb 25 : REM, Odyssey Arena, Belfast
March 13: Ronnie Wood & Fiends, Drury Lane, London
May 24 : Bruce Springsteen, Point Depot, Dublin
June 21 : U2 at Hampden Park, Glasgow
October : Marianne Faithfull, Waterfront Hall, Belfast
November 20 & 21 : Bob Dylan, Brixton Academy, London
November 26 & 27 : Bob Dylan, Point Depot, Dublin

Best show was a toss up between the 2nd Dylan Brixton concert and Springsteen.

Best moment was undoubtedly Mick Jagger's surprise appearance at Woody's show. Absolutely heart-stopping.

Biggest disappointment : Lucinda Williams postponing her UK shows at a few days notice as I had front row tickets to see her in Manchester.

This year will probably be mostly taken up with Stones shows. I have 7 shows in 7 months in the US, Germany, France, England and Scotland. Less than I've done on previous Stones tours though. In part I'm proud at my degree of self restraint, but disappointed because part of the reason has been a lessening in excitement at seeing the band on this tour.

Other shows lined up are Bonnie Raitt in Belfast in April and the rescheduled Lucinda Williams shows, which will probably be early summer. I'd be surprised if Dylan is back again so soon, but I'm hoping Steve Earle will be back as he visited here twice in 2004 and should be due to make a return visit.

(edit : forgot to include the REM show in my original list, which was excellent)

voodoopug This year I seen:

Sponge (with KK) - Sponge sucked, but KK was great (www.ktbmusic.com)

U2 with Dashboard confessional at United Center in Chicago: Just dreadful, we left after about half the show and vowed to never give BOno another dime of ours!

WIllie Nelson/Bob Dylan Schaumburg, IL - Loved Bob, hated WIllie

Petty/Crowes Tinley Park, IL - Crowes were OK, Petty was very good, surprised me with an encore of "Honey Bee"

Rolling STones Fenway 1
Rolling Stones Fenway 2
Rolling Stones Milwaukee
ROlling Stones SOldier Field
Rolling STones Memphis

THese were all better than anyone else I have seen, great seats at all shows except Fenway 2, onstage in Chicago, first 8 rows twice! Best performance was in Memphis, favorite Setlist was in Milwaukee or Memphis

time is on my side In recent years I've had to cut down on seeing as many concerts as I used to (married life can do that to you- my wife is always complaining that I'm seeing too many of them as it is), I also got to see a few shows with my teenage children:

Elvis Costello- Atlanta March 6, 2005
Mountain- Atlanta April 2005
The Black Crowes- Atlanta May 6, 2005
The Black Crowes- Atlanta May 7, 2005
Lou Reed & The White Stripes Music Midtown Festival- June 2005
Robert Plant- Atlanta June 30, 2005
Bruce Springsteen- Atlanta July 23, 2005
John Mellencamp & John Fogerty- Atlanta July 24, 2005
Kings of Leon- Atlanta August 2005
Lucinda Williams- Atlanta August 2005
Green Day- Atlanta August 2005 (with teenage children)
Coldplay- Atlanta September 2005 (with teenage children)
The Rolling Stones- Atlanta October 15, 2005
The Rolling Stones- Charlotte NC October 21, 2005
U2- Atlanta November 18, 2005

All in all, most of the performances were very good with the STONES, of course, topping the list. As you can see, I saw mostly name bands which leaves me to believe that, as I've gotten older, I no longer have the TIME, energy, or inclination to check out lesser known or local bands. While this is not a good thing, such are the ways of life.

ROCK ON
