FotiniD Have you heard this already? I've just received this email from the RS.com:

NRDC Presents the Rolling Stones In a FREE Concert to Turn Up the Heat on Global Warming
FANS CAN REGISTER NOW FOR A CHANCE TO WIN FREE TICKETS

Los Angeles, CA - (December 23, 2002) - NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council) announced today that the Rolling Stones will perform a special free concert to raise awareness about global warming on February 6, 2003 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA.

NRDC and the Stones are staging this landmark event to turn up the heat on global warming, and spotlight opportunities that exist right now to start fixing the problem.

"The Rolling Stones' commitment will help build unprecedented support for NRDC efforts to fight global warming," said NRDC president John H. Adams. "The Rolling Stones deserve a standing ovation for putting the environment on center stage."

Fans can enter a sweepstakes to win two free tickets by completing the entry form at www.nrdcstonesconcert.org or by mailing a 3x5 index card with the entrant's name, address, telephone number and date of birth to NRDC Stones Concert, P.O. Box 15099, North Hollywood, CA 91615-5099. No donation is required to enter or win tickets.

Online entries will be accepted from 9am PST on December 23, 2002, until 11:59pm PST on January 6, 2003. Mail-in entries must be postmarked between December 23, 2002, and January 6, 2003, and must be received by January 10, 2003. Only U.S. residents (excluding residents of Florida, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico) who are at least 18 years of age may enter. Limit 1 entry per person, per e-mail address and per household. Void where prohibited by law.

Winners will be selected at random and announced the week of January 13, 2003. Each winner will be notified directly via email or post. Each winner and each guest must pick up a ticket and a wristband at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Feb 4 (6am - 9pm), Feb 5 (6am - 3pm), or Feb 6 (6am - 12pm). Photo ID will be required. Each winner's guest may not attend the concert without the winner. Tickets not picked up by 12pm on February 6 will be forfeited. All winners' names and cities will be posted on the concert's official website, www.nrdcstonesconcert.org. For more details, see the Official Rules for the sweepstakes at www.nrdcstonesconcert.org.

The goal of this event is to encourage the public to learn more about global warming. Visit http://rollingstones.nrdc.org/globalwarming/ for information and to find out what you can do.

A private donor will be absorbing all expenses for this important evening. NRDC will also have a limited number of tickets as part of their fund raising efforts.

NRDC is America's leading force for the environment, making the air cleaner, our waters safer, and protecting the Earth's wild places since 1970. Backed by more than half a million members, NRDC lawyers, scientists and other specialists fight for tough safeguards, and make sure they're enforced. Global warming is the toughest environmental challenge yet, threatening the health of people, wildlife and economies around the world.

The Rolling Stones are completing the North American stretch of their critically acclaimed and sold out Licks World Tour and will launch the international leg starting in Australia on February 18 with shows to follow in Asia and Europe.

jb I do not like the idea of a free show...not their style to get caught up with political causes...hopefully not a sign they are calling it quits.
12-24-02 11:09 AM
Maxlugar This is so lame if true.

They should just do a free show and leave it at that.

It has not been proven that a) The world is getting warmer and b) If it is, it is man's fault.

I wonder if Algore is mc'ing the show.

It is lame. Do they have to do it in LA, now we are going to have a gigantic circle jerk of Hollywood celebs yapping at us telling us how smart they are about everything.

C'mon, The Stones fly around on a private 737. You know how much shit that spews out to haul a couple people.

JB is right, they should stay out of politics totally.

Maxlugar Anybody in an industry that generates so much wasted plastic (why do CD's have to be wrapped in so much plastic and tape? Are they going to go bad if not stored in a cool dry place?) and uses so much electricity should just keep their mouths shut on this one.

12-24-02 01:27 PM
luxury1 I crack those damn cases just trying to open them. Good point,Max
12-24-02 03:51 PM
swapwoodfortaylor Staggered. If it wasn't on the 'official site' I would have thought that it was a joke. "All money and no brains". First they do one for a bunch of dodgy south americans (but at least it made a glorious bootleg). Then a compulsory one for a good cause in the old northern colony. Now one for a cause that doesn't even exist! What next? 'Red Cross asylum seekers in calais'?! It won't sound so 'free' when you see the ticket prices!!!!!!
12-24-02 03:56 PM
Boomhauer I am just baffled at the Stones right now.

I don't hate 'em, I love 'em. But.........this is just complete non-sense and I'm not sure if these guys are getting anything, as Mick said in "Let Me Go", through their thick heads.

It's funny. It's in LA, which should be called Smogville, CA and I bet those damn actors are going to be at this show.
12-25-02 11:58 AM
littleredrooster I can picture Algore playing the keyboards with his feet during Honky Tonk!
Move over Chuck!
I'm ready to ROCK !
I hope the keyboards don't Tipper-over!!!

Everyone lucky enough to win a pair of tickets should bring a can of chlorofluorohydrocarbon spray to celebrate this event!!

Not to mention all the litter they introduce into the atmosphere every time they unleash all of those "rose petals" at every stadium show.

12-25-02 04:33 PM
steel driving hammer They have it ALL WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The Beatles should do a concert for Global Warming.

The Rolling Stones should do a concert for Gobal Cooling....

Get it, they still clash and I love it.
12-25-02 06:44 PM
justforyou I'm at loss for words, you guys all worked up over a free concert which also promotes some environmental awareness...
12-25-02 07:43 PM
stonedinaustralia actually it may be a cause that keith (at least) has some sympathy for - i've an i/view of him by stanley booth circa '88 and he had quite strong views about those issues

again it's the stones exploding our own preconceptions about what sort of band they are - 'tho i've always admired keith's refusal to let the music get caught up in politics -except perhaps the politics of individual freedom (the most fundamental kind)and even then mostly through implication rather than pontification (god, i sound like jesse jackson)

btw/ is that half-time gig at the football still on the cards??

Stones Free Concert - Great. For Global warming ? There is no proof it even exists. In the mid 1970's there was supposed to be a new ice age on the way. Weather goes in cycles but the eggheads won't tell you that. They can't predict weather 2 days ahead and they are trying to tell us what will happen in 25 years. The liberal enviromentalist bring it up to scare people and to keep the big donations rolling in to justfy their jobs.

I agree that there is no evidence. Many places around the world are getting colder. It's a real complex thing. This is one of the topics I've done at uni. I have a professor who is adament global warming is not happening. It is so refreshing to hear all the evidence contrary to common belief (which there is a lot).

As for the stones free show, I think it's probably more about good-will than anything else.

The friggin' icecaps are melting.

The hole over Antartica's gettin' bigger.

No proof... hmmm...

You're right. No proof of Global Warming. But definitely proof that we've fucked up the environment.

Whatever. Why do we care who the Stones choose to do a free concert for? As long as it's not for the Lil' Hitler Group Association, what's the big deal? It's a *free concert*.

As in, you may go and see the Stones.

For free.

Without fear of the Hell's Angels.

Unless Keith hires security.

Then we're in trouble.

-tSYX --- Ooh lah lah... Ooooo lah lah...
12-26-02 10:12 AM
Sir Stonesalot WTF is up with some of you people?

Who cares if global warming exists or not? What the hell does that have to do with rock n roll? Are you so politically brainwashed to hate enviormentalism that you can't appreciate this for what it is....A FREE CONCERT???

I'm for any cause that will give me free Stones tickets. I'm a fucking whore. A mercenary. You're telling me that I can have these 2 Stones tickets if I hug this tree? Yeah, OK, no problem, do I get backstage passes if I fuck the knothole? I don't give a fuck about the cause, just gimme the fucking tickets.

Are you saying that you are not gonna enter to win the tickets? If you win tickets, you aren't gonna go?

Look, it takes a big pile of money for the Stones to do a show. If some friggin' tree hugger wants to pony up the cash to get the Stones to play, and then give away the tickets(probably printed on recycled paper LOL!)...then great, more power to 'em.

In the end, it changes nothing, other than I'll have another show in my collection.
12-26-02 10:44 AM
Maxlugar I only have a few days to express any political opinion.

You see, my New Years Resolution is to keep "Politics Out Of the Post" (or POOP for short)

Keeping on POOPing is my new moto!

Until then:

GINGRICH!!!!!

Maxy!
12-26-02 10:54 AM
Stones I am not saying I would not go, but if they want to do a free concert to draw attention to a problem, they should do it for a good cause. There are plenty of homeless people living in boxes under bridges who need help.
12-26-02 10:58 AM
Maxlugar Yeah but then need the kind of help that only a mental institution can give.

"Round up the loonies, Ronnie!"
12-26-02 11:00 AM
Stones Touche'
12-26-02 11:13 AM
nankerphelge SS -- you know it bro.

I'd take the tix and go even if the show were being bankrolled by the Log Cabin Republicans and Howe Academy!

That's what corks are for!!

12-26-02 11:19 AM
Maxlugar What about:

"Gloria Steinem and Barbara Boxer Productions Presents The Rolling Stones: a concert for Womyn in Herstory!

ROOTP!
12-26-02 11:33 AM
rocker fuck global warming, fuck this free concenrt, fuck those left wing idiots in hollywood who yap yap about the enviroment, global warming (all the while while driving around to their parties in huge suvs and limos), "the evils of capitalism," their love for abortion and gay rights and any other left wing cause they can think of. can you imagine what kind of shape this country would be in if people like, warren beatty, ed asner, susan surranden (However you spell her last name), ben aflik, and the west wing guy (Emilo estevez's dad)were running the country.
12-26-02 11:38 AM
Sir Stonesalot I go to a benefit for homeless disco singers if the Stones were playing, and the tickets were free. Boxer and Steinem for Women's History? Yeah whatever, I'm there. Maybe I can get that Steinem chick to blow me.

The point is that it's THE STONES, and the tickets are FREE.

I don't give a shit about the rest of it.

POOP.

You get a gold star beside your name for that one Maxy!
12-26-02 11:40 AM
Maxlugar And you for this one:

"Maybe I can get that Steinem chick to blow me."

Priceless.
12-26-02 12:54 PM
Sir Stonesalot You know, it's a great day when both of us are getting gold stars!

So when are we going to Nasty's house to play?
12-26-02 01:02 PM
sasca Up there in the US you might not see evidence of global warming but down here in South Africa we're reminded of it every time one of us has to see a doctor about skin-cancer. Do I know enough about global warming to fully debate it? No, and neither, I suspect do you. But more knowledgeable people than us insist it it is happening. The fact that those who argue against its existence frequently have an economic stake in persuading us that it doesn't exist should tell you something.
But even if it doesn't, SS is right - it's a free Stones concert - why are you complaining?
12-26-02 01:11 PM
Maxlugar I don't know SS'y. Over the summer would be best I'd imagine.

And I guess after Nasty put that addition on to Casa De Habits.

You know, that addition he was talking about with the jacuzzi and pool/Foos ball room and bar?

This'll be so cool!
