Singing Santa found hanging in Melbourne
December 24, 2005 - 3:34PM
With his reindeer nowhere in sight, a 1.5 metre Santa has been found hanging upside-down from a power pole in Melbourne's north.
The singing and dancing statue was handed to police on Saturday after residents of Skyline Drive, South Morang, released it.
Santa had been strung up by his own wires.
The Santa is being given refuge at Mill Park police station and Constable Cameron Ryan said it had been entertaining officers on Christmas Eve.
"He's a lively sort of chap," he said.
"He sang all sorts of things until he went flat."
Constable Ryan said police were investigating how the Santa came to be tied to the pole.
"He was looking very suspicious, but he wasn't intoxicated," Constable Ryan said.
Investigating officer Constable Kellie Houlihan said police were trying to find the statue's owner.
"I'd say he's probably been in a front garden and somebody's come and picked him up," she said.
"They actually used his wires to hang him from around his neck ... I think that's why the residents took him down."
