OK, I am by no means an expert on this I'm hoping someone else out there will be able to provide more info. My mother is a BIG Neil Diamond fan and claims that his new CD had some sort of sofware installed on it that causes your computer to crash if you try to copy any of the tracks. Evidently there are lawsuits involved and many releases of the CDs have had to have been pulled from stores. Even more interesting is the fact that Neil has chosen not to perform any of the songs from the new album for the last two shows. Some say it because he is sick (he has cut the show by 45 minutes to 1.5 hours the last two shows) but others say it's cause he's pissed at Sony. I don't imagine there are a lot of Niel fans out here but the idea of this type of software becoming pervasive could affect many of us. Has anyone else heard of anything relative to this issues?
I did see this out there at some sight about Suicide Girls (which seems to be a whole separate topic worth investigating - check that out) They refer to "Sony's XCP rootkit." Evidently there is already a class action lawsuit againts Sony by some group known as EFF. The post is below:
The EFF has released a partial list of CDs which are infected with Sony's rootkit DRM:
Trey Anastasio, Shine (Columbia)
Celine Dion, On ne Change Pas (Epic)
Neil Diamond, 12 Songs (Columbia)
Our Lady Peace, Healthy in Paranoid Times (Columbia)
Chris Botti, To Love Again (Columbia)
Van Zant, Get Right with the Man (Columbia)
Switchfoot, Nothing is Sound (Columbia)
The Coral, The Invisible Invasion (Columbia)
Acceptance, Phantoms (Columbia)
Susie Suh, Susie Suh (Epic)
Amerie, Touch (Columbia)
Life of Agony, Broken Valley (Epic)
Horace Silver Quintet, Silver's Blue (Epic Legacy)
Gerry Mulligan, Jeru (Columbia Legacy)
Dexter Gordon, Manhattan Symphonie (Columbia Legacy)
The Bad Plus, Suspicious Activity (Columbia)
The Dead 60s, The Dead 60s (Epic)
Dion, The Essential Dion (Columbia Legacy)
Natasha Bedingfield, Unwritten (Epic)
Ricky Martin, Life (Columbia) (labeled as XCP, but, oddly, our disc had no protection)
Does anyone have more info?

Wow. That blows.
They are really getting desperate aren't they?
Some clever computer geek will put up free software that defeats the rootkit (they couldn't come up with a name better than that?) within a month or two.
The big labels are grasping at straws. They are stupid. Instead of embracing technology and using it to their advantage to deliver music to the buying public, they use technology to fight technology which will end up being defeated by other technology. It's dumb and a waste of time & money.
Besides...who'd want to copy any of the crap on that list? |

yes, this is a big problem. the trey album was one of the ones affected...
do NOT put one of these in your 'puter - it is a long and involved process to get all of this stuff off your harddrives, and no offense, but if y'all had problems getting bit torrent to work, you are likely NOT going to be able to restore your computer properly after this rootkit thing is on there...

A copy of Celine Dion is a good manner to help a friend with suicidal tendencies to finish himself.
merci Celine! |

Actually, I believe The Neil Diamond one is Produced by one Rick Rubin and is a stripped down and raw affair ala Rubins 'Johnny Cash' project and an attempt to re-introduce Diamond to-ahem- newer and younger audiences. |
