One of my dreams has always been to see the Pogues with Shane MacGowan. Today I found out they have reformed (again) and will cross the Western Ocean to make a Fairytale come true in New York - St. Patrick's Day at the Nokia Theater in Times Square. Well, of course that show, and all the other ones announced, sold out fast, but there's one more that goes on sale tomorrow. Here's the problem - that show, a Sunday, is I think the 7th or 8th show in a row for the Pogues, with St Patrick's Day in the middle of them. I'm thinking that there's a good chance Shane won't even show up for it, and if he does, it's going to be a trainwreck.
Should I go? Advice please. Anybody seen the Pogues?

FPM,
I would definitely buy tickets! I've seen them many times with and without Shane singing (I've actually been in a search party looking for him in local bars to get his ass on stage before!) The Pogues are used to playing without him and occasionally have someone waiting in the wings if he passes out before showtime. I saw them once with Joe Strummer singing for Shane but that's another story! I think with a long run of gigs in NYC they will have someone special waiting in the wings in case he crashes and burns before showtime! Go get the tickets ASAP. . .you won't be disappointed!

yeah - you were getting some bunk advice earlier...
ALWAYS get a ticket for what you can, and then work on upgrading, trading, etc.
but ALWAYS take a ticket that is available for something like this...

Sam Leith reviews the Pogues at Brixton Academy
The purpose of the Pogues, as I see it, is to make you feel as if you're in the best pub lock-in in the history of the world, with the role of the Irish drunk shouting unintelligibly at strangers taken by Shane MacGowan.
Spider Stacy, Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer of the Pogues
They've been doing this since 1982, on and off, when not chucking their singer out of a moving tour van. They still do it bloody well.
When they take the stage at the Brixton Academy, they open with Streams of Whiskey, and a crowd of old-time fans - one bearing an enormous superglued '80s mohican; another hoisting an infant daughter on his shoulders - bounces and chants along from the get-go.
My friend James Walton, Pogues scholar and TV critic of this newspaper, has a theory about the band. He reckons the secret of their success is that they are an extremely tight and professional band, fronted by a charismatic shambles.
During the roughly one song in three that Shane spends offstage - he shares vocal duties with Terry Woods - the band is as propulsive and energetic as ever. Shane, by the way, is in fine voice: you can't make out a word he is saying. "Suicidal streak," he seems to be growling at one point, in a manner that does not invite you to doubt his sincerity. "Sunny side of the street" is what he's actually singing.
The whole experience is utterly uplifting. How odd that, before the Pogues, it didn't occur to anyone that foot-stomping Irish folk music would go with punk rock like Guinness goes with whiskey. But it does, and their genius is to have discovered it.
The set starts strong and gets stronger, with little let-up and the barest minimum of chat. Lullaby of London skirls and stomps. Ned of the Hill - they still haven't forgiven Cromwell - snarls. The ragged grandeur of Dirty Old Town has the crowd swaying and singing along.
But, inevitably, it's Fairytale of New York, in the second encore, that we're all waiting for. It doesn't disappoint. Ella Finer - the daughter of the band's guitarist and banjo player Jem - takes the Kirsty MacColl part, bringing a real sweetness to her half of the duet.
Strangers are giving each other hugs in the mosh pit. Our TV critic staggers out wearing a Santa hat donated, somewhat forcefully, by a female passer-by. Shane embraces Ella, and a blizzard of artificial snow covers the front of the stage. It's cheesy as hell. It's lovely. Last orders are still a long way off.

CAUGHT LIVE
Pogues' drunken fairytale
By GISELLA FARRELL
Sun Online
WEDNESDAY night saw London's Brixton Carling Academy transformed into a raucous Irish pub – yes, The Pogues were in town.
The veteran folk rockers were finishing their Christmas 2005 tour in festive style, with drunken debauchery, classic tracks and an electric atmosphere.
With support from US/Irish punk group Dropkick Murphys, a night of Celtic excess seemed assured.
The famous venue was bursting with green and white striped Celtic shirts, and fans wearing fake broken teeth in homage to Shane's rotted dentures.
As notorious frontman Shane MacGowan stumbled onto the stage – clearly intoxicated – there was relief that he had shown up at all, although it remained to be seen if he could still sing.
Sing-a-long .... with the Pogues
But Shane showed young 'wildman' whippersnappers like Liam Gallagher how drink and drug-fuelled revelry is really done – slurring his way through classic Pogues tracks like Body Of An American, Dirty Old Town and Irish Rover in his incomparable style.
The other Pogues are well accustomed to Shane's incoherent behaviour and covered for him as he kept disappearing offstage for the odd track.
And the crowd just wanted to keep up with the on-stage party, drinking, dancing, and singing along, raising the heady atmosphere as the band played hit after hit.
Of course, it is Christmas, and we all wanted to hear the re-released classic Fairytale Of New York. The cheeky band knew it, and kept teasing us with multiple encores and misleading bars.
Finally it came, with the late Kirsty MacColl's part sang by pretty Ella Finer, daughter of guitarist Jem Finer. Although no one could sing Fairytale quite like Kirsty, Ella did a spirited job – most importantly keeping drunken Shane on his feet.
The couple finished the track with a waltz through the fake snow covering the stage while the audience sang yet another chorus to Fairytale – but then the inevitable happened – Shane's lack of coordination finally dragged slim Ella down and the two plunged over in the snow to a roar of applause.
But a Pogues show would never end on the floor. Somehow Ella and the band dragged Shane back to his feet in time for a joyous finale of Fiesta – and a feeling that Christmas without The Pogues would be unthinkable.

I just can't believe this almost slipped past me - if I'd been on my toes I'd have had tickets for St. Paddy's day, an absolute dream come true of epic proportions. Asleep at the switch. Jesus, Tom Waits isn't touring, is he?
Hey, let's sing some Pogues songs! I'll start:
Thanks and praises
Thanks to jesus
I bet on the bottle of smoke
I went to hell
And to the races
To bet on the bottle of smoke
The day being clear
The sky being bright
He came up on the left
Like a streak of light
Like a drunken fuck
On a saturday night
Up came the bottle of smoke
Twenty fucking five to one
Me gambling days are done
I bet on a horse called the bottle of smoke
And my horse won
Stewards inquiries
Swift and fiery
I had the bottle of smoke
Inquisitions and suppositions
I had the bottle of smoke
Fuck the stewards
A trip to lourdes
Might give the old fuckers
The power of sight
Screaming springers and stoppers
And call out coppers
But the money still gleams in my hand like a light
Bookies cursing
Cars reversing
I had the bottle of smoke
Glasses steaming
Vessels bursting
I had the bottle of smoke
Slip a fifty to the wife
And for each brat a crisp new five
To give me a break on a saturday night
When I had the bottle of smoke
Priests and maidens
Drunk as pagans
They had the bottle of smoke
Sins forgiven and celebrations
They had the bottle of smoke
Fuck the yanks
And drink their wives
The moon is clear
The sky is bright
I’m happy as a horse in shite
Up came the bottle of smoke
Twenty fucking five to one
Me gambling days are done
I bet on a horse called the bottle of smoke
And my horse won

Shane McGowan absolutely cracks me up. He's utterly hilarious with his slurred speech and what makes me laugh the most is his laugh!
Fairytale Of New York is ruining my Christmas though. Every time I switch on the TV, it's there!
