1982 EUROPEAN TOUR

Private show at the 100 Club, London, 31st May 1982

1982 European Tour Overview

After a five-month break, the Stones picked up where they left off, as they embarked on their first European Tour in six years.  29 of the 36 shows took place in stadiums, the exceptions being three theatre dates in Scotland to kick things off (after the band had been unable to secure a performing license for an outdoor concert there) a gig at the 100 Club show in London a couple of days later and a trio of arena shows in Frankfurt at the end of June.  The setlists were similar to the end of the US Tour (save for ‘Waiting On a Friend’ being dropped) and remained pretty static with just 26 songs played over the entire tour in shows which consisted of 23-25 songs per night. The Big Bopper’s ‘Chantilly Lace’ (never performed before this tour or since) and ‘Let It Bleed’ were dropped during the run of Frankfurt shows and ‘Angie’ was brought back in Madrid where it remained for the final nine shows.

Prior to 2012, nothing had ever been released officially from this tour.  In November of that year as part of the six archive releases to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary, the final date of the tour, a show in front of 125,000 at Roundhay Park in Leeds was made available as a download.  A DVD and 2-CD package was subsequently released as ‘Live at Leeds – Roundhay Park’ in 2015.  Visually, its a strange release, concentrating pretty much exclusively on the band onstage, with next to no crowd shots.   It is a historically significant show however, in that not only would it be the band’s final public appearance for seven years, but it would be the last with founding band member and longtime pianist and road manager Ian Stewart, who died in December 1985.

In October 2021, the Super Deluxe Edition of the ‘Tattoo You’ 40th anniversary reissue featured the audio of a full-length show from Wembley Stadium on 26th June (save for one song, ‘She’s So Cold’ which comes from the previous night, presumably due to the butchered intro it received on the 26th).  The last 45 minutes of this show has been available as a high-quality pro shot video since 1982, so not releasing the whole thing in a visual format was something of an opportunity missed.

Number of shows – 36

Number of shows in circulation – 35 (only the 100 Club concert is missing)

Recommended shows - The two full length releases mentioned above should adequately cover the needs of most fans for this tour, although there are better performances. (The first Wembley show is the better of the two for starters, although its only available as a very good audience recording).  Madrid (7th July) and Naples exist as partial soundboards with the first Gothenburg show (19th June) being probably the pick of the audience recordings.

Personnel: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts. Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman with Ian Stewart (piano) and Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bobby Keys (sax) and Gene Barge (sax)
